Etudie l’ethnologie et l’archéologie à l’Université de Neuchâtel. Il a effectué de nombreux terrains au Japon dès 1991, particulièrement dans le nord du Japon, à Hokkaidô, où il s’intéresse au peuple Ainu. Il étudie les dynamiques identitaires, culturelles et politiques de la société ainu contemporaine dans les sphères urbaines et rurales. En outre, il suit attentivement la participation des organisations Ainu et Japonaises aux forums internationaux liés à la question des peuples autochtones, qui constitue également un de ses thèmes de recherche depuis 1994. Ses autres domaines de recherche se situent en anthropologie des droits de l’homme et des institutions internationales, en anthropologie visuelle (photographie), en ethnomusicologie (principalement autour de la guimbarde), en muséologie et en archéologie (Extrême-Orient, Sibérie et Europe). Depuis 2004, il occupe la fonction de conservateur-assistant (département d’anthropologie visuelle) et de chargé de cours au Musée d’ethnographie de l’Université de Zurich (Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich, http://www.musethno.unizh.ch/.
