Philippe Dallais a étudié l’ethnologie et l’archéologie à l’Université de Neuchâtel. Il a effectué de nombreux terrains au Japon dès 1991, particulièrement dans le nord du Japon, à Hokkaidô, où il s’intéresse au peuple Ainu et où il a également mené des recherches archéologiques. Aujourd’hui spécialiste reconnu des Ainu et du Japon, il étudie particulièrement les dynamiques identitaires, culturelles et politiques de la société ainu contemporaine, ainsi que la place du patrimoine matériel et immatériel ainu au Japon et en Occident. En outre, il travaille sur la question des relations entre le Japon et la Suisse, des représentations du Japon en Suisse et en Europe, notamment au travers du phénomène de la collection. Il suit également attentivement la participation des organisations ainu et asiatiques aux forums internationaux liés à la question des peuples autochtones qui constitue également un de ses thèmes de recherche depuis 1994. Ses autres domaines de recherche se situent en anthropologie visuelle (photographie), en anthropologie du patrimoine, en muséologie, en anthropologie politique, des droits de l’homme et des institutions internationales, en ethnomusicologie (principalement autour de la guimbarde) et en archéologie (anthropologie des pratiques et discours archéologiques en Extrême-Orient, en Sibérie et en Europe). Depuis 2004, il a occupé la fonction d’assistant du Prof. M. Oppitz, puis de la professeure Mareile Flitsch, directrice du Musée d’ethnographie de l’Université de Zurich (Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich, http://www.musethno.unizh.ch/ ), où il est responsable des collections photographiques ethnohistoriques (département d’anthropologie visuelle), il est également doctorant et chargé de cours à l’Université de Zurich en anthropologie visuelle et du Japon.
